Sunscreen is not just a beach accessory; it’s a daily essential for healthy, youthful skin. It helps prevent premature aging, pigmentation, and even reduces the risk of skin cancer. But how do you choose the right SPF for maximum protection? Let’s break it down!

WHAT DOES SPF MEAN?

SPF (Sun Protection Factor) measures protection against UVB rays, which cause sunburn. The higher the SPF, the longer you can stay in the sun without burning. For example, SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB rays, while SPF 50 blocks 98%.

But remember: no sunscreen provides 100% protection!

WHICH SPF SHOULD YOU CHOOSE?

SPF 15-25 – For urban areas when you are outdoors for a short period.

SPF 30-50 – The optimal choice for daily use.

SPF 50+ – Necessary for intense sun exposure, beach days, mountains, and after cosmetic procedures (peels, laser treatments, mesotherapy).

UVB AND UVA: WHAT TO LOOK FOR?

Most people are familiar with UVB rays (sunburn), but UVA rays are just as important. They:

❌ Penetrate deep into the skin.

❌ Cause photoaging.

❌ Trigger pigmentation and loss of elasticity.

For full protection, look for “Broad Spectrum” or the UVA symbol in a circle on the packaging.

WHAT FORM OF SPF SHOULD YOU CHOOSE?

Cream – Ideal for dry and normal skin, providing good hydration.

Fluid, gel, or emulsion – Light texture for combination and oily skin.

Stick – Convenient for targeted areas (nose, cheekbones, lips).

Powder or spray – Extra protection throughout the day but not a substitute for the main cream.

CHEMICAL OR MINERAL?

Chemical SPF – Absorbs quickly and leaves no white residue. May contain additional skincare ingredients but can irritate sensitive skin.

Mineral SPF (with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) – Creates a physical barrier against the sun. Suitable for sensitive, acne-prone, and children’s skin but may leave a white cast.

HOW TO APPLY SPF PROPERLY?

✅ Apply 15-20 minutes before heading outdoors.

✅ Use enough – 2 finger lengths of cream for the face.

✅ Reapply every 2-3 hours, especially when exposed to the sun.

✅ Don’t forget your neck, ears, hands, and lips – they also need protection.

When choosing SPF, consider your skin type, lifestyle, and level of sun exposure. The key is to use it daily, regardless of the season. Your skin will thank you!
